COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Overhauser Put to Test on Saturdays

College is a Monday-through-Friday experience for most students, but Chad Overhauser has been spending his Saturdays in class.

DeWayne Patterson taught one session. This week’s will come from Professor Tedy Bruschi.

Overhauser, a redshirt freshman, has started at right tackle since Paul Kennedy suffered a season-ending knee injury in the second game against Southern Methodist.

Grades have varied. “What I have learned is that most of the people I’m blocking are 22 or 23, and I’m 19,” said Overhauser, who has the size, at 6 feet 6, 290 pounds, but not the maturity to handle many of the Pacific 10 Conference’s best pass rushers.

Patterson, of Washington State, showed him that when he had four sacks. “I got a lesson real quick in that one,” Overhauser said.

In Bruschi, Arizona’s pass-rushing defensive end and sack specialist, Overhauser will face another of the Pac-10’s best, but at least it will be a familiar face. The two played against each other in high school in the Sacramento area.

UCLA medical personnel have decided that All-American wide receiver J.J. Stokes does not need another MRI test, though there has been fluid buildup in his injured left leg. He has been practicing pass patterns with the offense for the first time in four weeks. Stokes suffered a thigh bruise in the season’s first game, against Tennessee, and since then has played only a few plays, against Washington State. Coach Terry Donahue said Stokes is not expected to play Saturday.
