THUMBS DOWN: Students at Cal State Northridge...

THUMBS DOWN: Students at Cal State Northridge voted down a proposal this week that would have generated $2.25 million to supplement the school’s athletic program (C1). . . . The decision may have left several teams, including football, subject to the budgetary knife and has jeopardized the school’s NCAA Division I standing. It marked athletics’ second such defeat of 1994.

SECURITY: The killings of two elderly Van Nuys women in their homes have prompted responses from both government and business. Councilman Joel Wachs on Wednesday proposed that the city develop a safety program, and an Arizona company is giving 50 alarm systems to people who use the Bernardi Multipurpose Senior Center. . . . “Many people will be able to sleep better,” says the center’s Sabella Richardson.

IN COURT: Bail for CSUN football player Jonathan George Beauregard, above, was increased Wednesday from $15,000 to $100,000. He’s charged with the attempted murder of his former girlfriend and her male acquaintance (C6). . . . Beauregard was taken away in handcuffs, but CSUN reiterated that he is still a member of the football team.

TAKE A NUMBER: It was another big opening in a town of big openings. But it was not a new Hollywood premiere that caused the excitement in Studio City Wednesday. It was a local institution--Art’s Deli--that had been out of business since the Jan. 17 quake (B1). . . . In an average week, Art’s goes through 1,000 pounds of pastrami, 400 pounds of lox and 200 dozen bagels.

NO CHEERS: There’s no joy in Valley sports bars. With no World Series, which was to have begun this week, and no pro hockey, many fans stay home. Bryan Culbertson, manager at Weber’s Place in Reseda, reports a 20% drop in attendance. He has 11 TVs, and almost nothing to show. . . . “Thank God for college football and Thursday-night games,” he said.
