Planned Fires Burn Tons of Plant Debris

A farmer Tuesday set ablaze 400 tons of orange tree trimmings in east Ventura, sending smoke throughout the area and prompting calls to firefighters.
County fire officials said the controlled burn, at Foothill and Aliso Canyon roads, was the largest of several in the county Tuesday.
Another 100 tons of orange tree trimmings went up in smoke on Bardsdale Avenue near Fillmore, and smaller fires were set near Ojai and in Fillmore, Ventura County Fire Department spokesman Charles Carranza said.
The Fire Department received about six calls from observers asking about the east Ventura fire, according to Carranza. Other residents reported white ashes on their cars.
Ken Field of the Ventura County Air Pollution Control Department said smoke from the fires--which were permitted by the county--was not expected to affect air quality.
“It’ll disperse rapidly and won’t be a problem,” Field said.
