Villa Park, Sophomore
Tennis/Singles
DeVera started the week slowly, falling behind 2-5 and love-40 to Canyon’s Shannon Wilkins, but from that point she was a different player. She beat Wilkins, 7-6 (7-0 in the tiebreaker), and beat her next two opponents, 6-0, to lead the then-No. 8 Spartans to a 10-8 victory over then-No. 4 Canyon Monday. Tuesday, she didn’t lose a game in a 15-3 victory over Foothill. Thursday, she became the first player to beat El Modena’s Brandi Freudenberg this season. DeVera beat Freudenberg, who had lost only four games this season, 6-4. “It was really fun to watch,” Villa Park Coach Sue Gardiner said. “Faye was just determined that she was going to play well.” She won her next to sets, 6-0, 6-1, as the Spartans won, 13-5, to improve to 10-1 and 6-0 in the Century League.
