COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Stokes Probably Won’t Be Ready

Quarterback Wayne Cook might be losing a job, Avery Anderson is gaining one, in part because J.J. Stokes probably won’t be available to regain one, and Bjorn Merten appears to be kicking himself out of one.

Cook is suddenly in competition with sophomore Ryan Fien to start Saturday at Arizona, although Coach Terry Donahue said UCLA’s five-game losing streak should not be blamed on the quarterback.

“I don’t know if it’s a quarterback decision,” Donahue said. “We’re just going to try and review the situation. If a change in the quarterback is called for, we’ll make it. I don’t think Wayne is responsible for the way we’re playing, but I also don’t think Wayne is playing as well as he needs to play.”

Cook completed 17 of 32 passes for 270 yards and a touchdown in Saturday night’s 23-14 loss to Oregon State, and was sacked four times.

Anderson is being promoted from third-string split end to starter after catching three passes for 73 yards against Oregon State. Anderson will replace Mike Nguyen, who has begun to drop passes.

The nominal starter, Stokes, was expected to be ready for Arizona but will have a second MRI test today after a recurrence of fluid buildup in his left leg. Merten, an All-American last season as a freshman, kicked field goals of 21 and 22 yards Saturday, but he also missed one of 32 yards and has made only four of his last 11 tries. The option is walk-on Greg Andrasick, who has never kicked in a college game.
