Angel reliever Ken Patterson and catcher Andy Allanson, each of whom has his season derailed by bizarre circumstances, cleared waivers and elected to become free agents.
The Angels filled the two roster spots with pitcher Mike James and utility player Luis Raven. They also took pitcher Kyle Sebach off the roster and sent him outright to triple-A Vancouver.
Patterson, whom the Angels reacquired on their final day of spring training, was recalled to the big leagues April 24. He threw six pitches against the Boston Red Sox before tearing a ligament in his elbow, requiring season-ending surgery.
Allanson’s contract was bought June 28 by the Angels, who then discovered that he had a broken right finger that necessitated surgery. He never played a game for the big league team.
