NEWPORT BEACH : Hospital Dedicates Land for City Park

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian has dedicated a 20-foot-wide strip of land on a bluff above West Coast Highway to the city of Newport Beach as parkland.
The contribution is part of the hospital’s development agreement with the city, which permitted construction of the hospital.
The future parkland, below Hoag’s lower campus overlooking a frenzy of reeds and pampas grass plumes, begins at the hospital’s Cancer Center and runs north to Superior Avenue. The entire strip is next to a bicycle path.
The hospital will bear the costs of landscaping and making sure old oil wells are properly capped.
No specific planning or landscaping has been done yet. City officials will consider whether to install trees and/or benches, Advance Planner Patricia Temple said.
The mini-park gives west Newport a small dose of much sought open space. Many west Newport residents hope to see the nearby Newport Oil Co. property converted into a park.
