PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Laguna Hills Relies on McGraw, and Wins, 28-0

MISSION VIEJO — Some might call Laguna Hills’ offense predictable, unimaginative or one-dimensional. But Friday night in the Pacific Coast League opener, you certainly couldn’t argue with Laguna Hills Coach Steve Bresnahan’s reasoning.

“Why would you want to have anyone else but Brandon McGraw carry the ball?” Bresnahan asked.

Laguna Hills didn’t. And Aliso Niguel, playing its first league game, couldn’t stop him.

McGraw, the powerful 6-foot-1 tailback, accounted for all 300 yards offense in the first 28 minutes of the Hawks’ 28-0 victory over Aliso Niguel at Mission Viejo High.

McGraw took the handoff from quarterback Cory Pardoe 31 consecutive times--once handing off to Adam Roman for a reverse that gained zero yards--and scored on runs of one, 27 and 70 yards, all in the second half, giving him 21 touchdowns this season.

His 300 yards rushing also gives him 1,273 this season. Only a Roman’s 40-yard punt return for a touchdown and 40 yards by the reverse in the final minutes were not credited to McGraw.

Laguna Hills (4-2, 1-0) attempted its only pass with five minutes left in the game and its only completion was for a two-point conversion.

“We thought we could run the ball from the opening drive,” Bresnahan said. “When we finally got some good field position in the second half, we began to score.”

McGraw had 121 yards by halftime, but his first fumble of the season cost the Hawks one drive. A missed field-goal attempt ended another.

As they did last week against Los Amigos, the Wolverines (2-4, 0-1), played well in the first half, with 101 total yards, but faltered in the second with only 60.
