CERRITOS — Last season, Brethren Christian went to the Division X title game. This season, it might be more at home in Steve Harvey’s Bottom Ten.
Brethren Christian lost its fifth straight game Friday night, 33-0, to Valley Christian (5-1, 1-0) in the Olympic League opener at Valley Christian High.
It didn’t take the Crusaders long to capitalize on a 15-yard punt by Warrior Tim Novinger.
Jonathan DeBie caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from Kirk Saarloos with 5 minutes 4 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Brethren Christian (1-5, 0-1) tried a fake punt on its next possession, but Horacio Freijo was stopped short of a first down.
Three plays later, Jason VanDuyn ran 43 yards for a score. He rushed for 165 yards in 26 carries.
Mike Cunningham gave the Crusaders a 21-0 lead on a two-yard run with 6:34 left in the third quarter. Heidi VanderFeer kicked the conversion for her first extra point of the season.
Jon Lee intercepted a pass by Brethren Christian quarterback Ryan Babcock and returned it 11 yards for a score.
Cunningham finished the scoring, going 48 yards with 1:08 left in the game. He rushed for 92 yards in 11 carries.
