PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Healthy Fielding Rolls Up 222 Yards, Three Touchdowns

Mission Viejo Coach Bill Denny wanted to establish a running game and a more balanced offense Friday night against Dana Hills.

And Todd Fielding made sure it happened.

Fielding rushed for 222 yards in 29 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead Mission Viejo to a 21-6 South Coast League victory over the Dolphins at Dana Hills High.

Fielding, who was healthy for the first time in a month since spraining his ankle in Mission Viejo’s second game of the season, got the running game rolling on the Diablos’ first drive of the game. He carried the ball five times on the five-play, 49-yard drive and scored from 10 yards out.

Fielding also did most of the work on the Diablos’ second drive, carrying the ball five times for 38 yards, including a two-yard touchdown.

Dana Hills scratched its single-back offense for a power-I formation, which features three running backs. The new scheme worked as the Dolphins marched 72 yards on 17 plays and scored when Randy Hein ran in from two yards.

Mission Viejo forced Dana Hills into throwing the ball, however, when Fielding scored his third touchdown of the night on a four-yard run with 10:16 left in the game.

“We were lucky we were able to get that final score because they came out and played some good, smash-mouth football,” Denny said. “We were able to force them out of it with that last score because it takes too long to score using that offense.”
