MISSION VIEJO — Sophomore running back Malaefou MacKenzie scored three touchdowns to lead Capistrano Valley to a 21-9 South Coast League victory over San Clemente Friday night.
MacKenzie carried 29 times for 92 yards.
The Cougars’ second possession of the game was all MacKenzie. He carried the ball on every down, nine times for 42 yards, finishing it with a three-yard touchdown run with 3 minutes 4 seconds left in the first quarter.
MacKenzie put Capistrano Valley (4-2, 1-0) up 14-0, on a 12-yard run with 4:16 left in the half.
The Cougar defense stuffed San Clemente (3-3, 0-1) in the first half, holding the Tritons to 51 yards total offense.
Triton quarterback Jeff Carlin was pressured all night by Cougar defenders Andrew Klein and Jason Purvis, who sacked him four times. Purvis was in on three of those.
Carlin, who scored the Tritons’ only touchdown on a one-yard run in the third quarter, had averaged more than 200 yards per game passing before the game.
Friday night the Cougar’s secondary, led by defensive back, Jeffrey Brion and linebacker Sam Petke held Carlin to 115 yards, completing 13 of 31 passes.
San Clemente had an opportunity to get the ball back, down 14-9, with less than three minutes remaining, but a roughing-the-kicker call gave Capistrano Valley a first down and MacKenzie wrapped up the victory with a nine-yard touchdown run with 45 seconds left.
