PLACENTIA — Delonne Kelly scored two second-half touchdowns to lead El Dorado to a 20-16 victory over Cypress in a Empire League opener Friday night at Valencia High.
Cypress led 10-0, late in the first half. Quarterback Mike Marzicola completed a five-yard touchdown pass to Mike Golebiowski with three seconds remaining in the half.
Kelly, who rushed for 68 yards in 15 carries put El Dorado (3-3, 1-0) in the lead for good on a 13-yard touchdown run with 8 minutes 15 seconds left in the third quarter. Kelly added to the Golden Hawk lead with a four-yard scoring run with 7:37 left in the game.
Trailing 20-10, Cypress used a 90-yard kickoff return touchdown by Greg Cleave to cut the Golden Hawk lead to four points.
Cypress (2-4, 0-1) took a 3-0 lead with eight minutes left in the first half on a 32-yard field goal by Bryan Huskey. A fumble by Kelly was recovered by the Centurions’ Bobby Brito at the El Dorado 34 on the final play of the first quarter.
Brito broke up a pass attempt by the Golden Hawks on fourth down. Cypress took over on its 40-yard line. Brito proceeded to elude two El Dorado pass defenders and race into the end zone with a 60-yard pass completion from David Wheeler.
