The ‘Shawshank’ Model

Sometimes it’s the hardly noticed details that characterize truly outstanding filmmaking. Such is the case with “The Shawshank Redemption,” where no fun is made of a prison convict who happens to stutter. As a person who has stuttered most of my life, I welcome Hollywood’s modeling this kind of appropriate behavior to the public. Treating stutterers with dignity and respect would make life easier for the 3 million Americans coping with this communications disorder.
