STANFORD — Stanford University alumni William R. Hewlett and David Packard have given their alma mater its largest single donation ever: $77.4 million.
The gift will be used to construct four buildings for science and engineering studies, renovate others and create a landscaped mall, Stanford President Gerhard Casper said.
“We believe this gift will ensure that Stanford University will have leadership in science and engineering second to none during the 21st Century,” Hewlett and Packard said in a statement.
The two are co-founders of Hewlett-Packard, one of the nation’s largest computer companies.
Construction of the new complex is to begin in the fall and will be completed by the fall of 1999.
