Annie Ebiner of St. Lucy’s won the girls’ competition and Gabriel Cisneros of Diamond Bar won the boys’ title at the San Gabriel Valley cross-country championships last weekend at Mt. San Antonio College.

Ebiner clocked 18 minutes 45 seconds and led her team to the Division II title. Malinalli Martinez of Bishop Amat was second in 19:06 and helped the Lancers win the Division I championship.

Cisneros was timed in 16:04.

The South Hills football team is off to one of its best starts in years, but the Husky football team isn’t the only team at the school that is contending for a championship.

The South Hills girls’ tennis team, a Division V semifinalist last season, has emerged as a favorite for a Southern Section title.

The Huskies (9-0) began the week ranked No. 1 in the division.

South Hills is led by seniors Gina Labi, Leslie Gomez and Roslyn Chaisanguanthum.

Several San Gabriel Valley schools are ranked in their divisions in girls’ tennis, girls’ volleyball, water polo and cross-country.

The Diamond Bar girls’ tennis team is ranked seventh in Division II. Pasadena Poly is fourth, St. Lucy’s sixth and Alhambra 10th in Division III. South Hill is No. 1 in Division V and Gladstone and Sierra Vista are sixth and 10th, respectively.

The Arcadia girls’ volleyball team is ranked seventh in Division II. San Gabriel, which finished second behind La Habra in the Diamond Bar invitational, is second and Wilson ninth in Division III. South Hills is third and Flintridge Prep seventh in Division V.

South Pasadena is No. 2 and La Canada 10th in Division III water polo. In Division VI, Charter Oak is second, Wilson third, Bonita fourth, Walnut sixth, Rowland eighth and Los Altos 10th.

The Maranatha boys’ cross-country team is ranked third in Division IV. Flintridge Prep is fourth. In girls’ cross-country, Bishop Amat is third in Division II, St. Lucy’s is sixth in Division III and Flintridge Sacred Heart and Maranatha are sixth and ninth, respectively, in Division IV.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Pasadena City College football team enters Saturday’s Mission Conference home game against Long Beach City College coming off a 37-29 upset over Mt. San Antonio College.

Joe Phears completed 22 of 41 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Lancers over the Mounties, who were ranked 12th in the nation by the J.C. Gridwire. Deshawn James had five receptions for 49 yards and two touchdowns and also scored on an 84-yard kickoff return.

Tailback Serrell Rollins gained 93 yards in 20 carries for the Lancers (2-1-1). Regular tailback Saladin McCullough and defensive backs Hassan McCullough and Derrick Rowe did not play because they violated a team rule.

Cody Lee Smith completed 27 of 50 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns for Mt. SAC (2-1-1), which plays at Palomar on Saturday.

Citrus (1-2-1), which had a bye last week, returns to action on Saturday with a Foothill Conference game at Rio Hondo.

Citrus defeated Chaffey two weeks ago for its first victory under Coach Dean Karnoski.

Citrus’ water polo team enters Friday’s Foothill Conference match against College of the Desert after winning its tournament last weekend.

Tim Postiff and Alex Rodriguez each scored two goals for the Owls (19-5) in their 7-3 championship-match victory over Cypress.

COLLEGES

La Verne’s football team is ranked 25th in NCAA Division III heading into Saturday’s Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Whittier. La Verne is 4-0.

Darren MacLellan gained 206 yards in La Verne’s 23-6 victory over Cal Lutheran last weekend. MacLellan is the SCIAC’s leading rusher with 649 yards in four games.

Claremont-Mudd (1-3) plays host to Menlo in a nonconference game after last week’s 49-28 SCIAC victory over Whittier.

John Shipp passed for 249 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 115 yards and two scores. Shipp is averaging 291 yards a game in total offense, which ranks second in Division III.

Pomona-Pitzer (1-4) has a bye. The Sagehens lost to Occidental, 31-18, in a SCIAC game last week. Jack Ramirez completed 18 of 36 passes for 255 yards, but had three passes intercepted. Robert Hicks gained 128 yards in 29 carries and scored a touchdown.

Azusa Pacific (1-4), lost a nonconference game to Chapman, 59-18, last week and has a bye this week. Chapman quarterback Curtis Robinson, who played at Pomona High and Citrus College, passed for 183 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 169 yards and three touchdowns.

Cal Poly Pomona will honor the accomplishments of former women’s basketball coach Darlene May at a dinner and reception Nov. 14 at the Kellogg West Conference Center.

Claremont-Mudd, Pomona-Pitzer and La Verne will take part in the SCIAC multi-dual meet on Saturday at La Mirada Park. The meet and the SCIAC championships are the only two conference events of the season.

PREP OF THE WEEK

Demetrius Stampley, Nogales--Stampley, a junior, gained 110 yards in nine carries and scored on runs of 46 and 45 yards to lead the Nobles to a 26-6 victory over Etiwanda.

He also had a 25-yard touchdown reception and intercepted a pass.

COLLEGE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

John Shipp, Claremont-Mudd--Shipp, the Stags’ quarterback, completed 13 of 24 passes for 249 yards and three touchdowns and gained 115 yards in 16 carries and scored two touchdowns in a 49-28 victory over Whittier.

Shipp, a 6-foot, 165-pound senior from Westminster, is leading the conference in passing and total offense.

MISCELLANY

A punt, pass and kick program sponsored by the County of Los Angeles Parks and Recreation department will be staged Friday and Saturday at two locations.

The competitions, for boys and girls ages 8 to 13, are scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday at Carolyn Rosas Park in Rowland Heights and 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Stimenitz Park in Hacienda Heights.
