From Reuters

The 500 fastest-growing private U.S. companies saw sales shoot up to more than $7 billion last year from just $541 million in 1989, Inc. magazine said in an annual survey released Wednesday.

Over that period, the companies also created close to 47,000 jobs.

At the head of the pack were booming telecommunications and computer networking companies.

Inc. said the South is home to nearly a third of the growth companies. California is the No. 1 entrepreneurial state, home to 73 companies on the list.

The fastest-growing company was Object Design, a computer software firm based in Burlington, Mass., with sales growing at a staggering 23,376% between 1989 and 1993.
