Common Cause Leader to Quit After Disappointing Year

WASHINGTON — Common Cause President Fred Wertheimer is leaving his job after 24 years as one of Washington’s most visible and persistent government ethics critics.
Tuesday’s announcement came just two days after Congress quit for the year, leaving behind bitter disappointments on Wertheimer’s most fervently sought goals: campaign finance, lobbying and gift reform.
Wertheimer, 55, said he is leaving because it is “time for a change,” but he said he hasn’t decided what to do next. He plans to stay involved in reform issues.
