Who: Kathleen Hathaway

Contribution: Recognized for her work as an outreach service coordinator for the Allergy and Asthma Network: Mothers of Asthmatics. Hathaway became an activist because she has asthma and her sons have allergies. The Laguna Niguel resident distributes educational material to libraries, grocery stores, pharmacies and schools. Hathaway also is a volunteer for the American Lung Assn.

Firm Gives Police Special Light Meter

Who: Bergen Brunswig Corp.

Contribution: Donated $677 to the Orange Police Department for the purchase of an industrial light meter to measure light at crime scenes. Steven Harrold, corporate security director for the pharmaceuticals company, noticed police were impressed with his Minolta light meter when officers were investigating a homicide near his office. Precise measurements of available light can be important evidence, but the financially strapped Police Department had been using inferior equipment.

Reading Teachers Honored at Dinner

Who: Literacy tutors at Placentia Library

Contribution: About 70 volunteer tutors in the Placentia Library Literacy Service were recognized at a recent dinner. They each spend about two hours per week teaching reading skills to adults who are functionally illiterate or who don’t speak English. Placentia’s literacy program began in 1980 and is the oldest in the county. Information: (714) 524-8408.

Club Puts Up Cash to Catch ‘Taggers’

Who: Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary Club

Contribution: Gave $1,000 to the city of Laguna Niguel for its graffiti prevention program. The club, in Dana Point, has asked that the money be used to reward those who provide information leading to the arrest and conviction of graffiti “taggers.” .

Temple Collects Food for the Needy

Who: 650 families of Temple Bat Yahm, a Reform Jewish congregation

Contribution: Collected an estimated five tons of food for the needy during a High Holy Days food drive, said temple spokesman Bill Pisetsky. The food drive is part of the national Mazon program, which solicits donations for various needy groups. The food was given to the Orange County Interfaith Shelter, Catholic Charities of Orange County, the Orange County Rescue Mission, Human Options and SOS.
