PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Penalty-Riddled Woodbridge Wins Despite Itself

Despite an array of mistakes Friday night, Woodbridge remained undefeated, defeating Sacramento Florin, 10-0.

Battling injuries at several key positions, and having to overcome 140 yards in penalties, the Warriors were happy to get the victory one week before their Sea View League opener against Santa Margarita.

“We haven’t had that many penalties in a while,” Woodbridge Coach Rick Gibson said. “But we had a lot of different players in new positions. Overall, I was pleased with this performance.”

The Woodbridge defense was without standout linebacker Ian Dominelli, who missed the game with a sore ankle, but it stuffed Florin’s run-dominated attack. The Panthers (1-4) had only 29 yards rushing and 54 yards of total offense.

The Warrior defense keyed on Florin running back Jermaine Dyson, limiting the normally explosive runner to 13 yards in 10 carries.

The Warriors (5-0) had good field position in the first half, but had trouble moving the ball. Woodbridge started in Florin territory on five of its first six drives, but managed only three first downs in the half.

The Warriors broke through for the only score of the half on a 48-yard touchdown pass from Brian Millat to Gavin Crew.

Late in the game, Nathan Bennett iced the Woodbridge victory, connecting on a 29-yard field goal.
