Jeff Nelson of Burbank High set a national high school record of 8 minutes 36.3 seconds in the two-mile run at the 1979 Pepsi Invitational track and field meet.
Nelson broke the mark of 8:40.9, set by Craig Virgin of Lebanon, Ill., in 1973.
