PREP ROUNDUP : Corona del Mar Upsets Irvine in Girls’ Cross-Country

Corona del Mar upset top-ranked Irvine (2-1) in girls’ Sea View League cross-country, 23-32, Thursday at Corona del Mar.
Tracey Clark took first place for the sixth-ranked Sea Kings, finishing in 18 minutes 12 seconds. Brooke Meek (19:09) and Dresden Howell (19:30) finished third and fourth to help seal the victory for Corona del Mar (3-0).
Irvine’s Jessica Corbin, Orange County’s top runner, has bronchitis and has been out all week.
In other Sea View League girls’ cross-country:
El Toro 19, Woodbridge 44--Junior Stacy Roberson finished first for El Toro on the three-mile O’Neill Regional Park course in 19:54. El Toro improved to 2-1.
In the Pacific Coast League:
University 25, Laguna Beach 30--Sophomore Misha Wilson of University set a course record of 19:47, breaking the mark of 19:59 on the three-mile Eric Hulst Memorial Course in Laguna Beach. University is 2-0 in league.
In the Sunset League:
Edison 24, Marina 3--Fifth-ranked Edison (3-0) was led by second-place finisher Keri Wright, who ran three miles in 18:54. Heather Cuthbertson was first for Marina in 18:47.
In Golden West League boys’ cross-country:
Santa Ana 22, Saddleback 33--Second-ranked Santa Ana (4-0) out-sprinted eighth-ranked Saddleback (3-1). Danny Rivero led Santa Ana with a second-place finish (15:38) on Mason Park’s three-mile course.
In the Sea View League:
Newport Harbor 27, Santa Margarita 28--Ninth-ranked Newport Harbor (2-1) edged Santa Margarita as the Sailors’ Shahram DeZahd finished first (16:12) over three miles at Santa Margarita.
In the South Coast League:
Dana Hills 26, Capistrano Valley 32--Juan Almejo finished second (15:46) over three miles to lead Dana Hills (2-0). Aldaberto Sanchez of Capistrano Valley (1-1) finished first at 15:27.
In Sunset League boys’ cross-country:
Edison 20, Marina 35--Jeremy Milton won in 15:56 over three miles for host Edison (4-0).
In Sea View League girls’ tennis:
Corona del Mar 14, Santa Margarita 4--Nina Vaughan swept her sets, 7-5, 6-2, 6-3, to lead the eighth-ranked Sea Kings (7-3-1, 3-0) over No. 9 Santa Margarita.
Newport Harbor 12, Woodbridge 6--Vanessa Godbey swept her sets at No. 1 singles, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, 6-0, to lead No. 2 Newport Harbor over the third-ranked Warriors.
In Sunset League girls’ tennis:
Los Alamitos 11, Edison 7--Fourth-ranked Los Alamitos (9-1, 2-0) was helped by No. 3 singles player Darcy Taylor, who won two of three sets, 0-6, 6-3, 6-3.
In Century League girls’ volleyball:
Orange 3, Villa Park 0--Charlene Conley had 21 kills to lead Orange (8-0, 2-0), 15-12, 15-9, 15-7. Villa Park is 7-1, 1-1.
In the Olympic League:
Calvary Chapel 3, Whittier Christian 0--No. 10 Calvary Chapel (3-1, 2-0) won, 15-6, 15-9, 15-9.
In the Pacific Coast League:
Laguna Beach 3, University 0--Lisa Ravensburg led fourth-ranked Laguna Beach with 10 kills over University, 15-1, 15-3, 15-5. Laguna Beach is 4-1, 2-0.
In Sea View League girls’ volleyball:
Newport Harbor 3, Woodbridge 0--Top-ranked Newport Harbor (6-0, 2-0) was led by Misty May’s 10 kills in the Sailors’ 15-0, 15-5, 15-2 victory at Woodbridge.
In South Coast League girls’ volleyball:
Mater Dei 3, San Clemente 2--Trailing, 14-4, in the fifth game, ninth-ranked Mater Dei rallied to win, 18-16. Roberta Gelhke had 34 kills and Laurie Layton 70 assists for the Monarchs (3-3, 1-1).
In the Sunset League girls’ volleyball:
Edison 3, Los Alamitos 0--Jill Butts had 39 assists, 10 blocks and seven digs for third-ranked Edison in its 15-8, 15-4, 15-8 victory over Los Alamitos. Edison remains undefeated at 8-0, 2-0.
Huntington Beach 3, Esperanza 0--Jill Meyers had 12 kills and Melissa Wendt 11 for No. 2 Huntington Beach (6-1, 2-0), which won 15-2, 15-6, 15-7.
