Quarterback Chad May shredded a suspect secondary for 379 yards Thursday night, leading No. 19 Kansas State past Kansas, 21-13, and giving the Wildcats their first victory in Lawrence, Kan., in 25 years.
May befuddled the Jayhawks with post patterns, crossing patterns, screen passes, shovel passes and bombs. By halftime, the Wildcats (4-0) had one yard rushing, 271 passing and a 14-0 lead.
It was the seventh time in his 16-game career that the 6-foot-2, 220-pound May had thrown for more than 300 yards. He completed 33 of 44 passes.
After a scoreless first quarter, May completed seven of nine passes in a 69-yard scoring drive, capped by J.J. Smith’s eight-yard touchdown run.
Smith scored his second on a one-yard run later in the quarter. The Wildcats then took the second-half kickoff and used 16 plays to go 80 yards. May completed passes to Kevin Lockett for 10 and 15 yards and gave the ball to Rod Schiller for a one-yard scoring dive.
Kansas (3-2), which was ranked 76th nationally in pass defense, scored twice in the fourth quarter to make it mildly interesting.
