James B. Marine; Longtime Publicist

James B. Marine, a Los Angeles publicist who was twice elected president of the Western States Advertising Agencies Assn., has died. He was 69.
Marine died Wednesday in Los Angeles of complications from emphysema.
The former New York resident moved to Los Angeles in 1963 to become head of public relations for what was then the Bowes Co. He was named the company’s president and CEO in 1971 and held those titles until the agency merged with Abert, Newhoff and Burr in 1990.
Marine was credited with creating the hummingbird logo for Marriott’s Desert Springs Resort and Spa in Palm Desert.
In recent years, he was president of Brown, Keefe, Marine.
