LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Supervisors Tentatively OK Limit on Garage Sales

The Board of Supervisors moved Thursday to tighten restrictions on what for some Southern Californians has become a weekend habit, tentatively approving an ordinance to limit garage and yard sales in unincorporated areas to twice a year.
“This was spurred by a number of complaints about people conducting these sales on a weekend basis, some of them even selling new merchandise and essentially doing business in a residential area,” said Robert Alaniz, a spokesman for Supervisor Gloria Molina, who sponsored the measure. “These are not the typical ‘let’s clean out the garage and closet’ types.”
The ordinance allows residents to have two garage sales a year, with each sale not to exceed three consecutive days. Sale hours would be limited from 7 a.m. till 6 p.m. and signs advertising the sale would be limited to one for each street surrounding a residence.
The ordinance was tentatively approved on a 3-1 vote, with Supervisor Mike Antonovich dissenting.
A vote on final approval of the ordinance is scheduled in two weeks.
