STANTON : Title Holder Signs On as Children’s Guide

Andrea Fuhrmann, 22, who holds the Miss Stanton title, will translate in sign language for a group of deaf children when they visit Disneyland for the first time today.

Fuhrmann, who was 60% deaf before a successful operation two years ago, will help about 20 deaf children from Vancouver get to know the amusement park as guests of Air Canada.

Fuhrmann’s father, Robert, a customer services manager for the airline in Los Angeles, helped organize the trip.

The program, called “Dreams Take Flight,” started five years ago when Air Canada delivered more than 100 disadvantaged children to Disney World in Florida, Robert Fuhrmann said.

Last year, another contingent came to Disneyland. That “trip was so popular and the company has had so much positive feedback, that this year there will be two trips,” Fuhrmann said. Other chaperons will be members of the Stanton American Legion.

The second contingent will arrive Oct. 14.

Andrea Fuhrmann, who acted as a tour guide last year, said: “I’m very excited. . . . I think the kids like me to be there for them.”

Fuhrmann, who will be Miss Stanton until November, is a student at Cypress College. She has undergone two operations in her life, the first when she was 10, and now has 95% normal hearing.
