Furniture Makers Workshop: The Assn. of Woodworking and Furnishings Suppliers is leading a workshop today to explore water-based adhesives for furniture manufacturers as an alternative to the popular but environmentally harmful adhesives now in use. The conference, designed to help Southern California furniture makers comply with environmental regulations, is co-sponsored by the Institute for Research and Technical Assistance and various environmental groups. The Air Quality Management District has pressured furniture manufacturers to abandon the use of volatile organic compound-based adhesives, which contribute to smog levels, and to phase out the use of trichloroethane-based adhesives, which contribute to ozone depletion. The workshop will begin at 8:15 a.m. at the Southern California Edison Customer Technology Application Center in Irwindale.
