Miami Bounces Back, Defeats Rutgers, 24-3 : Big East: Hurricanes forget about Washington, tune up for Florida State by defeating Knights.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Chris T. Jones scored on an 82-yard pass play and set up a touchdown with another reception as No. 13 Miami used a couple of big second-quarter plays to defeat Rutgers, 24-3, Saturday.

The victory was the 67th in a row for the Hurricanes against an unranked opponent and came a week after Miami saw its NCAA-record 58-game home winning streak ended by Washington.

Miami, 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the Big East, wasn’t able to take all of its frustrations out on Rutgers (2-3, 1-2) because its offense was sporadic. But the Hurricane defense, which knocked Rutgers quarterback Ray Lucas out of the game just before halftime with a partially dislocated shoulder, was impressive.

“Isn’t it a win?” defensive tackle Warren Sapp said when asked if he was satisfied with the margin. “What’s the big thing about beating a team to death? This game isn’t for humiliation.”

Sapp set up a 14-yard touchdown run by Michael Stewart with a fumble recovery and 19-yard return. Miami’s other scores came in the fourth quarter on a 21-yard scoring pass from Frank Costa to Jonathan Harris and a 29-yard field goal by Dane Prewitt.

“We’re back on our way to where we should be,” said Miami Coach Dennis Erickson, whose team next faces Florida State.
