Democrats Win in Louisiana

BATON ROUGE, La. — Louisiana Democrats narrowly maintained control of the state’s congressional delegation Saturday, staving off a Republican challenge that would have put four of the state’s U.S. House seats in GOP hands.
Incumbent Rep. Jimmy Hayes, 47, won 72,059 votes, or 53%, with 100% of the vote counted in the southwest Louisiana district’s precincts.
He edged out former Republican congressman Clyde Holloway, 50, who lost his home base two years ago in redistricting mandated by the 1990 census. Holloway garnered 54,609 votes, or 40%.
Under Louisiana’s open primary system, all candidates enter the primary, regardless of party affiliation. Any candidate receiving 50.1% or more of the vote is elected. Otherwise, the top two vote-getters face off in the general election.
The seven congressional races were settled by the primary. Incumbents in the state’s other six districts ran unopposed.
