Academics May Need Lessons in Maturity

“A Lesson in Love?” (Sept. 16) presents a dilemma that I believe can be solved in a simple, straightforward manner.

If professors or other faculty members become enamored of students in their classes, they can demonstrate the maturity and wisdom that is part of their role as teachers and wait to consummate the relationship until the student has completed the course.

Delayed gratification is a sign of maturity, and one hopes faculty members are mature enough to wait a few weeks to fulfill their carnal desires, when power would no longer be an issue.

For every case of a Will Durant, who married his student, Ariel, and went on to a lifelong partnership as scholars and writers, there are hundreds of heartbroken young women who were unprepared for the rejection of their mentor and tutor.
