BREA — Katella High’s Josh Welton missed a 25-yard field goal attempt as time expired, giving Brea-Olinda a 7-6 victory in a nonleague game Friday night at Wildcat Stadium.
Welton had brought the Knights to within a point when he caught a nine-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Sal Viramontes. The play came with 4 minutes 14 seconds left in the game.
The snap was bad on the Knights’ extra-point attempt, and holder Chris Marquez picked up the ball, but his pass into the end zone fell incomplete.
Katella (0-4) got the ball back with 1:58 left after Brea (3-1) punted from its own nine-yard line. The Knights took over on the Brea 43.
Viramontes connected on first-down passes of 18 yards to Timmy Ho and 17 yards to Dan Schmidt before the Knights ran the clock down to three seconds.
Welton’s kick was wide right.
Brea broke the scoreless tie with 1:09 left in the first half. Jerome Owens scored on a three-yard touchdown run up the middle. Owens led all rushers with 102 yards in 27 carries.
Brea limited Katella to 32 yards in total offense in the first half, but the Knights moved the ball much better in the second half.
Viramontes was seven of 14 for 133 yards.
