Ever get the feeling that you are being watched while waiting for a traffic light to turn green in Irvine?
In a way, you are.
The eight busiest Irvine intersections are monitored by closed-circuit cameras, linked to the Irvine Traffic Research and Control Center on the second floor of City Hall.
Irvine traffic engineers change the timing of traffic signals from control center computer terminals to compensate for traffic jams.
Four more intersections will be monitored by the end of the year.
During the past 19 years, the number of traffic signals in Irvine has grown from 30 to 215.
