Japan Announces Plan to Deregulate Nation’s Economy: A government reform panel released a set of wide-ranging proposals as a response to U.S. demands that Japan ease market access for foreign goods. The plan requires formal approval from the Cabinet, more work on details by individual ministries and, in some cases, passage by Parliament of new laws. Nevertheless, announcement of the proposals may be the strongest step Japan manages to take toward mollifying its trading partners before the July 8-10 Naples summit of leading industrialized nations.
