Dell Offers Stripped-Down Pentium PC: Dell Computer Corp. of Austin, Tex., fired another round in the personal computer price wars with the introduction of its Dell Dimension XPS. The machine, based on Intel Corp.’s most advanced Pentium chip, has a base price of $1,999, making it the cheapest Pentium-based PC available. It has no CD-ROM drive or other multimedia features and has a smaller hard drive than the company’s more powerful machines. Intel has gradually been dropping prices on its Pentium microprocessor, the newest and most powerful “brain” for personal computers, launched late last year.
