Family Van Runs Over, Kills Toddler

GARDEN GROVE — An 18-month-old boy died early Sunday after being accidentally run over by a van his father was backing out of the driveway as the family prepared to leave for church, authorities said.

Giovanni Murillo was declared dead of multiple internal injuries about 9:30 a.m. at UCI Medical Center after his father, Marcos Giovanni, 33, ran over him at the home in the 12000 block of Hazel Avenue.

“The child had been in the house with the family and wandered out the front door as the mother was dressing the other children,” Sgt. Joseph Johnson of the Garden Grove Police Department said. The van “knocked the child down and the rear wheel ran over him. The dad is really quite upset,” he said.

No charges have been filed in the case, Johnson said. An autopsy was scheduled for this morning.
