Government Backs HDTV Development: The Ministry of Electronics Industry unveiled a plan to produce high-definition television sets by 2000, the official Xinhua News Agency reported last week. The ministry has formed a partnership with eight of the country’s largest television manufacturers to research and develop HDTV sets, the agency said. The plan is part of China’s efforts to keep up with TV technology in the United States and Japan.
