Artic Fuzz posted the biggest upset of the Hollywood Park meeting when, with help from the stewards, he won Friday night’s ninth race.
Making his first start as a gelding and racing for the first time since Sept. 9, 1993, Artic Fuzz finished second under Jose Silva in the $25,000 maiden claiming race, but moved up when first-time starter Go Hardy Go was disqualified to third for interfering with favored Romanticon in the stretch.
Owned by the Way-Jo Stables and trained by Leon Boykin, who had failed to hit the board with two previous starters at the meeting, Artic Fuzz paid $220.80.
In his first three races, all last year at Del Mar, Artic Fuzz had been beaten a total of 49 lengths. He finished last at 111-1 in his debut, then finished 10th of 12 at 125-1, and in his final race before Friday was ninth at 157-1.
