SHERMAN OAKS — Fire destroyed a first floor unit of a vacant three-story apartment building Thursday and damaged some others on the second floor, authorities said.
About 35 firefighters fought the 4:32 p.m. blaze in the 4200 block of Mary Ellen Avenue, said Jim Wells, a Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, but not before it spread to units on the second floor, he said.
The building, damaged in the Jan. 17 Northridge earthquake, is vacant while undergoing repairs, Wells said. The building was not red-tagged, he added.
Firefighters estimated the damage at $40,000. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Wells said.
