A 23-year-old man was killed late Wednesday after he ran a red light and his car was struck by a pickup truck at Alicia Parkway and Trabuco Road, the Sheriff’s Department said Thursday.
The driver of the pickup truck, an off-duty Orange County sheriff’s deputy on his way home from work, suffered minor injuries, Lt. Tom Garner said.
He was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo for observation.
The victim, whose name was not released pending notification of his family, died at the scene.
Witnesses told investigators that the victim was headed south on Trabuco Road shortly before midnight when he ran the red light, Garner said.
Three cars traveling on Alicia Parkway were crossing through the intersection simultaneously, according to Garner.
The deputy’s truck hit the right side of the victim’s car and flew over the top of it, landing upright on its tires.
