Prep Voices : Sports Yearbook Filled With Accomplishments
- Share via
As valedictorians across Orange County speak of facing the future in their high school graduation addresses, it’s time to take a look back at the people, events and issues that helped make 1993-94 a memorable year in county high school sports.
Few prep sports fans are likely to forget the accomplishments of the Brea-Olinda girls’ basketball team, which won a record fifth State title and fourth consecutive. Or Los Alamitos’ football team, which extended its unbeaten streak to 35 games while winning its third consecutive Southern Section championship.
Or the athletic feats of Huntington Beach’s Tony Gonzalez, who will play football and basketball at California next season. Or Foothill’s Tara Oettinger, who led the county’s track and field contingent with top marks in four events and was the state’s long jump champion. Or Marcy Crouch, who was a central figure in Marina’s girls’ soccer and softball titles.
County schools won 37 section titles and six State titles.
But memories from a high school sports season are limited only by the number of people taking it all in. So we asked readers to share their most memorable or significant moments of 1993-94.
Members of The Times Orange County prep sports staff also have their memories about the people, events and issues that made the greatest impression on them in the last 10 months.
It’s been a very good year.
