CORFU : EU Seeks President
Leaders of the 12 European Union nations convene on this Greek island Thursday and Friday to choose a successor to Jacques Delors as president of the EU’s powerful executive commission. There is already talk of a possible deadlock at the meeting, the EU’s semiannual summit.
Delors’ second five-year term expires at the end of the year, so if no successor is chosen at Corfu a special summit may be required in the fall.
Meanwhile, Russian President Boris N. Yeltsin will come to Corfu to sign a trade agreement with the European Union. The accord is considered an important link binding Russia with the West.
