Fire gutted one Simi Valley apartment and damaged another Monday afternoon, injuring no one but claiming the life of a cat.
Ventura County Fire Department investigators have determined that smoking materials caused the fire, which began in a first-floor apartment in the 200 block of Ventura Avenue at about 3:25 p.m., said Sandi Wells, a department spokeswoman.
The fire spread to the apartment directly above and went to two alarms before it was finally quelled by about 18 Ventura County firefighters, Wells said.
The families who lived in the apartments were not home at the time the fire broke out, she said.
