Stories in Brussels newspapers centered mainly on the country’s opening game against Morocco and the state of one of Belgium’s best players, Marc Degryse, who was hit at the leg during a game with some Americans last week but was well enough to score the only goal in a 1-0 victory.
The weather is a serious topic of discussion because of the big temperature difference between Florida and a mostly cold and rainy Belgium: “Georges Grun and his partners are preparing to live through an inferno on the grill of Orlando’s Citrus Bowl campus,” the French-language daily Le Soir says.
In a front-page story, Le Soir explains its surprise at the lack of enthusiasm in the World Cup among Americans, saying that ABC will show only 11 of the 52 World Cup matches. It adds: “Nonetheless, this 1994 World Cup is surely ‘on a planet scale’ the major event of this end of century.”
