Buyukuncu Honored at National Meet

Woodbridge’s Derya Buyukuncu was named Athlete of the Year at the National High School Championships on Saturday in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Buyukuncu, who also was named male swimmer of the meet, won the the 100-yard freestyle (44.16) and the 100 backstroke (48.91).
Other Orange County swimmers participating included Irvine’s Jason Lezak, who finished fourth in the 50 freestyle (21.4) and fifth in the 100 free (47.2), and Villa Park’s Matt Cornue. Cornue was second in the 200 free (1:44.12) and sixth in the 100 free (47.2).
The meet is an invitational and is only for the nation’s top high school seniors.
