WILDERNESS ABOVE THE SOUND: The Story of Mount Ranier National Park by Arthur D. Martinson (Roberts Rinehart: $11.95; 76 pp.). Martinson traces the history of one of America’s first National Parks in this slim volume. The spectacular beauty of the volcanic cone and surrounding forests inspired a preservation campaign that lead to its protection from development in 1893. Martinson supplements his narration of the struggle to maintain the park in its natural state while admitting increasing numbers of visitors with a wonderful array of turn-of-the-century photographs.
