It’s Bottleneck and Bottleneck

After a century of being the most heavily planted grape in California, Zinfandel was nosed out by Cabernet in 1992, 34,567 acres to 34,142. The race is still still on, though. Even though 773 acres of Cabernet were planted last year, the state Cabernet total only reached 34,933 acres because vines infested with the new strain of root louse (phylloxera) and other ailments were taken out. Meanwhile, Zinfandel climbed to 35,341 acres.
