Councilman Burnie Dunlap has announced his intention to seek another four-year term on the City Council.
Dunlap, 51, said this week that encouragement from a cross-section of Brea residents and from his family prompted him to run for office again. If reelected, Dunlap said he will focus on redesigning Brea’s monetary policies in light of dwindling financial support from state government.
“We need to be smarter, we need to be more creative so we can provide city services in a way that doesn’t place a burden on the taxpayers,” said Dunlap, director of insurance services at Brea Community Hospital. He was initially elected to the council in November, 1990.
“We need to make Brea economically vital and strong,” he said. He said a downtown revitalization project is one example of how city revenue can be increased.
Dunlap said he would also strive to “continually reflect the values of the people who live here.”
As for the council’s accomplishments during his term, Dunlap noted that the city has balanced its budget and reduced expenses over the past three years, implemented a police bicycle patrol, increased affordable housing and moved ahead with the Brea Community Center, which is scheduled for completion by May of next year.
While serving as mayor in 1993, Dunlap held a series of town hall meetings designed to increase the public’s dialogue with elected officials.
Dunlap is married and has two grown children.
