Fountain Valley, the top-seeded team in the Division I playoffs, was in trouble in the fifth inning of its semifinal against La Crescenta Crescenta Valley. With the score tied, 1-1, Ponchak came on in relief with a man on third and walked the bases loaded. He then struck out the clean-up hitter and finished the game to get the victory. Friday in the final against Lakewood, he had the Barons’ only run batted in in their 3-2 victory, and recorded his fifth save of the season when catcher Danny Hoppie got the final out at the plate.
