OMAHA — Rick Gutierrez’s sacrifice fly in the 11th inning gave Oklahoma a 4-3 victory over Arizona State on Monday night in the winners’ bracket of the College World Series.
The run broke a string of seven scoreless innings by relievers of both teams, with each team’s ace getting the decision--Bucky Buckles (4-3) for the Sooners and Noah Peery (11-2) for Arizona State.
Peery walked pinch-hitter Dustin Hansen to lead off the 11th and a sacrifice bunt and passed ball got him to third for Gutierrez’s fly ball to center.
The Sun Devils (44-17) will play Miami, a 7-5 winner over Auburn on Monday, in an elimination game today. Oklahoma (48-17) will await the winner of that game in a Thursday afternoon semifinal.
Danny Buxbaum’s two-run double in the seventh helped top-seeded Miami overcome six errors.
