Strodes Creek Uninjured in Training Mishap

NEW YORK — Strodes Creek, the Kentucky Derby runner-up trained by Charlie Whittingham, was taken off the track during training for the Belmont Stakes early Sunday morning in a horse ambulance but was uninjured.
Strodes Creek’s exercise rider, Sonia Simmons, pulled up the 3-year-old colt during a morning gallop after she apparently thought the horse had taken a misstep.
“Nothing happened that we could see. He must have stepped on something or took a bad step. The girl jumped right off,” Whittingham said. “The pony boy figured that it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have him in the ambulance. He walked in fine and came out fine. He may have stepped on a rock.
“A couple of veterinarians looked at him and couldn’t find anything wrong.”
Groom Charles Clay said Strodes Creek’s legs were iced and 16 X-rays were taken of his right-front leg, and “nothing appears wrong.”
Whittingham said he planned to gallop Strodes Creek again today.
