Desert Protection Bill

Never before have I read anything in The Times that appalled and infuriated me as did the May 26 editorial, “Don’t Gut Desert Protection Bill.” How dare you advocate banning from a huge section of the eastern Mojave desert the group that has done more for genuine conservation and habitat preservation than all other such groups combined--hunters!
The people you would bar from the desert are the ones who brought wildlife back from its condition of near-extinction at the turn of the century to its present state of abundance. Shame on you! The people you would ban from the desert are the ones who contribute nearly a billion dollars per year to such things as habitat enhancement projects so that our wild creatures can find a place to live in today’s crowded world.
